The Leipzig cotton mill covers an area of 10 hectares, where cotton was processed from 1884 until the early 1990s. Where industry once flourished, galleries, workshops and studios now create a creative flair. The Spinnerei Leipzig serves as a center for contemporary art and culture. The artistic settlement began in 1994, 30 years ago. It was mainly artists from the so-called "New Leipzig School" who are regarded as pioneers in the revitalization of the area. Today, over a hundred painters, photographers, sculptors, media and conceptual artists, as well as workshops, architects, designers, jewelry and fashion designers have established their creative centers on the site.
