Background to the Bach Competition
The International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition Leipzig is one of the most renowned music competitions for young talents in the world. Every two years, they compete for a week at Bach's historical place of work. The most important criteria for judging the works of Bach and his contemporaries include artistic quality, technical perfection and individual maturity. A special feature of the competition is the use of both modern and baroque instruments.
The competition was first held in 1950 and has taken place every two years since then, organized by the Leipzig Bach Archive and the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Academy of Music and Theatre in Leipzig. The patron is the Minister President of the Free State of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer. President of the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition Leipzig since 2002 is the pianist, harpsichordist and Harvard professor Robert Levin. The main sponsor is Sparkasse Leipzig.
