Traffic restrictions on October 09, 2024 on the occasion of the Day of the Peaceful Revolution - City of Leipzig

In addition to the event in the Gewandhaus and the traditional prayer for peace in St. Nicholas Church, the festival of light along the historic demonstration route will be a highlight. Numerous installations and action areas are planned along the entire inner city ring road - from Augustusplatz to Georgiring, Willy-Brandt-Platz, Tröndlinring, Goerdelerring, Dittrichring, Martin-Luther-Ring and Roßplatz.

The inner city ring road will be completely closed for the Festival of Lights from October 9 at 4 pm until October 10 at 4 am. An important part of the traffic concept involves a large-scale diversion of the B 87 trunk road within the city area and signposting accordingly. In addition, it will only be possible to enter the city center until 4 pm. Traffic disruptions could occur as early as 2 pm.

From 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. it is no longer possible to leave the city center. Before 7 p.m. and after 1 a.m., entrances and exits are permitted via the three locks Universitätsstraße/Grünewaldstraße, Hallisches Tor/Gerberstraße and Thomaskirchhof/Gottschedstraße.

Cab traffic is only possible to a limited extent. The cab ranks at the main station have been restricted since October 7. The spaces on the east side and in the central building of the main station as well as in the Goethestraße and Tröndlinring areas will not be available during the closure period from October 9 at 2 pm. The cab ranks on the west side and in Querstraße will remain accessible with restrictions.

Visitors arriving by car have very limited parking options in the parking garages outside the Ring. It is therefore essential to use the park-and-ride lots at Leipziger Messe, Völkerschlachtdenkmal, Lausen, Plovdiver Straße and Schönauer Ring as well as the parking lots at the Sportforum. The event areas, which are marked with no stopping signs, must be strictly observed. Permanent exemption permits and residents' parking permits are invalid on this day. In the course of the arrival and departure of guests for the ceremony, there may be further traffic obstructions in the Goethestraße/Augustusplatz area. Further restrictions are to be expected throughout the city center. The closure measures will be gradually lifted from 1 a.m. on October 10, and the ring road will be fully accessible again from 4 a.m. onwards.

Buses and trains will not run within the Ring during the event. A special transport concept will enable visitors to get to and from the city center with the Leipzig public transport company. The inner city ring road will be closed to public transport from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. the following day. A special timetable will be in place from 4:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., which will entail extensive changes to the entire route network.

It is possible to travel to and from the Festival of Lights by S-Bahn via the stations Leipzig Hauptbahnhof (underground platforms), Markt and Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz. In the late evening, the Leipzig City Tunnel can only be used on one track from around 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. as part of a maintenance measure.

Further information, including a special route map for the evening, is available at www.lichtfest.leipziger-freiheit.de/anfahrt and via the Leipzig-MOVE app and www.L.de/v.
